Copped Out

Driving down a busy lane is always a chore. Add to it Chennai’s scorching heat, chatter-box five year old and a map-reading wife. The story that unfolded was extremely predictable with an unpredictable twist.

An argument unfolded between GK and I while driving and GK (who was at the steering) skipped the red light. We were immediately cornered by the cops and asked for our documents.

Like us, a couple of other cars also seemed to have skipped the light and got caught by the cop. We were waiting for our turn to be questioned.

Meanwhile Mr.I am always Right Husband started off with how I distracted him from the road and hence this fiasco. Not to create further commotion, I was quiet. (Are you serious? The steering was in your hands dude..!! Humph)

As the cop began to check our documents, in the rear seat, Pogo started wailing. “I don’t want to go to Jail..” he cried. I was in no mood to pacify him. (baby.. We didn’t do enough to go to jail yet.. Your father is still walking around.. See?) but the wailing grew louder and louder as the cop peeped through our window.

The cop now had lost his marbles at having a little kid cry so loud. He quickly rushed through our documents, gave us a ticket and asked us to leave.

It took quiet some cajoling to make pogo understand that we weren’t going to jail. He was completely shaken. Finally, we told him that cops would also follow the three-warning rule before sending us to jail. A big bowl of ice-cream and lot of scolding the driver (he he he) for his carelessness, pogo finally relented.
